The University of Manchester IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter is pleased to welcome Dr Anjan Bose from Washington State University for a lecture titled “Evolution of Power Grid Operation and Control.”
Abstract: This presentation covers the development of grid control centres from the days of the first digital SCADA systems in the 1960s, which operated the generation and transmission system. The more powerful computers in the 1970s enabled online network applications like state estimators, contingency analysis and optimal power flow for energy management systems (EMS). The development of the operator training simulator (OTS) also occurred in the same time frame. These digital technologies have now spread to the distribution management systems (DMS), which have helped in incorporating increasing distributed renewable generation and storage.
Anjan Bose is a Regents Professor and the Distinguished Professor of Electric Power Engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he also served as the Dean of the College of Engineering & Architecture from 1998 to 2005. He served the US Department of Energy as a Senior Advisor on the electric power grid in the Obama administration. He is a leading researcher on the operation and control of the electric power grid. He has worked in the electric power industry as well as academe for five decades. He received his BS, MS and PhD, all in Electrical Engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur, University of California – Berkeley and Iowa State University, respectively.
Dr. Bose is a Member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Foreign Member of both the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and a Fellow of the IEEE. He has served on the governing boards of both the US NAE and the Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS), of which he was also the President. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award, the Third Millennium Medal, the Herman Halperin Electric Transmission & Distribution Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the IEEE. He received several awards from CIGRE, including the CIGRE Medal. He has been recognised by both Iowa State University and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with their distinguished alumnus awards. He has served on several editorial boards and many national and international technical committees. He has consulted for many electric power companies and advised government agencies throughout the world.
