The presentation will start with a broad overview of recent developments in Australia’s power grid and National Electricity Market (NEM). Focusing on the Australian context, the impact of renewable distributed generation, closure of coal plants, and demand response schemes on NEM will be discussed using game-theoretic (Cournot) models. In addition, some earlier results on the impact of Electric Vehicles on distribution grid as well as ongoing research on various types of demand management methods will be briefly presented.


Assoc. Prof. Tansu Alpcan

Assoc. Prof. Tansu Alpcan received Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2006 and is a Senior Member of the IEEE since 2013. His research investigates applications of optimisation and game theory to security and resource allocation problems in smart grid and electricity markets.
He served as chair, associate Editor and TPC member of several notable workshops and conferences including IEEE Infocom, IEEE ISGT and IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). He is Steering Board member for Conference on Decision and Game Theory for Security (GameSec) and was the general chair of the inaugural edition in 2010.
Tansu Alpcan is currently an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. He has also authored and co-authored more than 150 journal and conference articles as well as several textbooks such as “Network Security: A Decision and Game Theoretic Approach”.
He has worked as a senior research scientist in Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, Berlin, Germany, from 2006 – 2009 and as Assistant Professor at the Technical University Berlin from 2009 – 2011 while continuing his affiliation with the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories. Tansu Alpcan joined the Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Melbourne, Australia in October 2011, where he is currently an Associate Professor and Reader.
